About
United for Freedoms LDF, a program of the Urban Justice Center, provides organizations and individuals facing litigation and other government actions that threaten their rights with financial and technical support to pay for the legal defense they need.
What We Do
Lawyers can be expensive. For nonprofit organizations and individuals whose civil and human rights are under attack, we can help pay for legal services and can even help find an attorney.
We don’t provide legal advice or legal services or representation.
We’re nonpartisan. Party affiliation doesn’t matter to us when deciding whether to award funding.
What Happens Next?
We’ll review your application as quickly as possible to see if you’re potentially eligible for funding. If so, we’ll ask for some additional information to help us evaluate your case and make an informed decision.
And if you don’t have a lawyer lined up, that’s okay—we might be able to help you find one.
How We Decide
Everything we fund has to meet the legal requirements for a legal defense fund. That means, for most litigants, the case needs to help define the scope of a civil or human right as protected by the U.S. Constitution, state constitutions, or federal or state law. Section 501(c)(3) charitable organizations may also apply for funding for a broader range of legal defense needs.
Unfortunately, we can’t fund everyone. We’ll let you know if we can’t provide funding for your case, but don’t take that to necessarily mean your case isn’t important.
